Indonesia is set to transform how its sustainable building practices are assessed and monitored with the development of the country’s first standardized tool  for measuring emission reductions and energy savings. GBPN and The Ministry of Public Works and Housing have collaborated on the tool, which will assist in driving the country closer to its decarbonization goals.

Fajar S. Hutahaean, Head of the Green Building Secretariat at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, emphasized the importance of having a standardized approach to measure the impact of green buildings in Indonesia.

“Accurate measurement tools are essential in promoting green building practices. The official tool developed in collaboration with GBPN’s experts will enable us to quantify emissions and energy savings effectively, integrated to the Ministry’s Official Building Management Platform and supporting our national goals for sustainable development,” Mr. Hutahaean said.

“The collaboration between GBPN and our ministry ensures that Indonesia is on the right path to meet its green building targets by integrating measurable, evidence-based approaches into our regulatory framework and our National Roadmap.

“The progress to mainstream green building practice is well in line with the National Roadmap for Green Building Implementation in Indonesia, the Green Building Secretariat is optimistic and confident that this collaboration with experts from GBPN will also increase our knowledge and capacity to implement our planned action plans in the coming years.”

The newly developed tool will be integrated in the ministry’s official building management platform, enabling more informed decisions and encouraging wider adoption of sustainable construction practices and certification.

Matthieu Caille, GBPN Senior Manager, highlighted the strategic impact of this collaboration on Indonesia’s sustainable development efforts.

“This project marks a pivotal step in mainstreaming green building practices in Indonesia. By establishing an official measurement standard, we are providing a solid foundation for stakeholders to track and verify the benefits of green buildings,” Mr. Caille said.

“GBPN’s support in developing these measurement tools will not only help reduce emissions but also highlight the tangible energy savings that green buildings can offer to residents and businesses alike.”

The collaboration aims to set a precedent for how green building impact can be measured, monitored and reported, contributing to Indonesia’s broader commitment to sustainable development goals. The official tool will be used to measure energy usage in a building and provide insights and baseline data for potential emission reductions.

“Having measurable data is crucial for scaling up green building initiatives. This collaboration demonstrates how government and international organizations like GBPN can work together to create actionable strategies that drive positive environmental impact,” Mr. Caille said.

The Ministry of Public Works and Housing and GBPN will continue their partnership to refine Indonesia’s online building management platform that will include green building practices requirements and certification process.
