New course – Learn to engage the transformative power of building climate policy

As a leading source of carbon emissions, the building sector is critical to global ambitions to mitigate the climate emergency and reach net zero emissions. But the power of policy and its mechanisms to bring about transformative change and drive down emissions are not well understood. 

GBPN has developed an online course designed to support policy makers in understanding the potential of policy reform in the buildings sector, and how coupling building energy codes with complementary policies can lead towards a net zero future. The course is called Getting to zero emissions with building energy codes: The biggest opportunity to respond to the climate emergency. 

The course is FREE and takes around 120 minutes to complete. It is delivered using a combination of techniques, including engaging video animations and includes examples of best practice from around the world.

Currently available in English or Bahasa Indonesia. 

Course Modules

Module 1

The challenge of getting to zero emissions by 2050

An introductory module featuring an engaging animated video.

When you have completed this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the problem the Paris Agreement is addressing
  • Explain why the building sector is important in addressing climate change
  • Describe the role that building policy packages play in achieving zero emissions. 

Module 2

The elements of building codes

This module gives a short overview of different approaches to building codes around the world.

When you have completed this module, you will be able to:

  • Define a building energy code
  • Describe different types of building codes
  • Describe some of the limitations of codes
  • Describe the status of codes in the world

Module 3

Building to code

Learn about net zero carbon buildings in this module.

When you have completed this module, you will be able to:

  • Define net zero carbon buildings
  • Explain why it is important to consider the life cycle of a building when calculating carbon contribution 
  • List the three core requirements that must be met to qualify for net zero carbon 
  • List the four trends of zero carbon building policies
  • Describe some of the main benefits of buildings ‘built to code’ 
  • Describe how building energy codes link to the Sustainable Development Goals

Module 4

Criteria for best practice building codes and policy packages for net zero buildings

This final module presents best practices for developing and implementing building codes and, importantly, the policy packages that include them.

When you have completed this module, you will be able to:

  • Describe best practices for developing building energy codes 
  • Describe the steps and actions in the policy pathway
  • Explain why the effectiveness of a code is in how it is packaged with other policies 
  • Use strategies to overcome barriers to building efficiency
