The building sector at the global level utilizes 36% of total energy consumption, including 60% of electricity and contributes to 40% of carbon emissions in the world. In fact, buildings are the biggest contributor to carbon emissions after industry and transportation. The building sector, particularly housing, is an important one to pay attention to in a country like Indonesia, with relatively high economic growth.
The key challenges in building performance are functionality, comfort, health, management and conservation of energy. Building materials and construction systems need to be well supported and the principles of Sustainable Development / Low Carbon Development applied.
