GBPN Workshop in Yogyakarta Drives Collaborative Progress for Building Decarbonization

A recent GBPN workshop in Yogyakarta, Indonesia brought together a dynamic coalition determined to transform the nation’s building sector. The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), and Insgreeb of Universitas Gadjah Mada came together to pave the way for a shift towards net zero energy buildings with the development of National Roadmap for Building Decarbonization.

Dian Irawati, Director of Settlement and Housing Engineering Development from the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, said that she and her team were excited to work collaboratively with MEMR, Insgreeb and GBPN. 

“Collaborative development of this roadmap is important for decarbonization of buildings in cities and districts throughout Indonesia as mandated by Government Regulation No.16/2021. The roadmap will be presented to theMinister of Public Works and Public Housing,” Ms Irawati said. 

The workshop helped foster mutual understanding among stakeholders on crucial aspects such as data collection for energy baselines and data integration. Also present at the workshop was Head of the Sub-directorate of Data and System Development from the Ministry of Public Works, Fajar Santoso Hutahaean. His presence highlighted the importance of capacity building for government officials.

“With this collaboration, the Ministry’s interests are synergized, because we are part of this joint effort with MEMR, Insgreeb and GBPN in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in building sector as collaborative work to achieve Indonesia’s enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC),” Mr Hutahaean said. 

“The National Roadmap of Building Decarbonization will be an interesting product because in my opinion this collaboration already has its own special impact for the nation.”

“Alongside the development of this national roadmap, the Ministry would like to be supported in Green Building Knowledge capacity upgrade support provided to government officials, empowering them with essential tools and insights.” 

Hendro Gunawan, Deputy Director for Technical Assistance and Cooperation of Energy Conservation, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, presented the Ministry’s role, emphasizing their dedication to energy transitions in public and residential buildings and supporting the collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing.

“Our policy and strategy includes the implementation of minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) to encourage the use of high energy-efficient technologies in buildings,” Mr Gunawan said. 

“We also collect energy consumption data, through a system called Online Energy Management Reporting (POME) reporting. The methodology has been recognized by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and this can serve as one of the primary data sources to support the implementation of the roadmap.”

The workshop set a clear goal to create a National Roadmap for Building Decarbonization, with a targeted completion date of the end of July 2023. The project will start with the harmonisation of data across ministries for the baseline and scientific methodology to analyse energy efficiency in many cities. GBPN Indonesia Country Manager, Ery Wijaya, highlighted that this milestone aligns with Indonesia’s Enhanced NDC commitment, reinforcing the nation’s dedication to sustainable practices and reducing the carbon footprint of its building sector.

“This collaborative effort serves as an inspiration for the green building sector in Indonesia,” Mr Wijaya said. 

“The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Insgreeb Universitas Gadjah Mada, and GBPN’s experts share a unified vision. By combining their expertise, insights, and resources, they are paving the way for a sustainable transformation that will positively impact cities and regencies throughout Indonesia.”

“As the National Roadmap for Building Decarbonization takes shape, we can anticipate an exciting future where energy-efficient technologies, sustainable practices, and net zero energy buildings become the new norm in the nation,” Mr Wijaya said.
